Scratch and Safeguarding: Navigating Access Challenges in UK Schools

Scratch is a popular tool for teaching coding in UK schools, but its open online community raises safeguarding concerns, leading some schools to block it. While Scratch offers moderation, reporting tools, and teacher accounts to help manage student safety, risks remain around exposure to inappropriate content. Tis blog from Barefoot's Ben Davies highlights the balance schools must strike between giving pupils access to creative coding opportunities and ensuring online safety.

Early Years Live Lesson - Winter Warmers

In this engaging winter-themed live lesson, children will explore patterns through a creative and hands-on activity: designing scarves for snowmen! The session is ideal for Early Years and Reception-aged learners and supports development in the areas of communication, creativity, and early mathematical thinking.

During the live lesson children will

Identify and talk about patterns they see around them.

Continue partially completed patterns and create their own using colours, shapes, and simple sequences.

Use logical thinking, self-checking, and making improvements to their work.

Express their ideas and choices, building confidence in speaking and sharing.

This lesson is delivered remotely and designed to be interactive, with opportunities for children to share their ideas and creations. No specialist computing knowledge is needed—just a willingness to explore, create, and have fun!
